I just got back from the Allman Brothers performance at the Beacon
Theatre. It was another excellent performance by the brothers on their
28th anniversary show, but to top it off Page made an appearance on
stage for the encore, One Way Out. (I missed his appearance last year
by one night.) He started off a little slow mostly seeming to admire
the singing of Gregg and letting Dickey take the spotlight. Once he
got the signal from Dickey, he had two nice solos, and had the place
going crazy. Well this was the perfect ending to another amazing
performance by the Allman brothers band, and it was nice to see Page
again.

Subject: PAGE jammed with the Allman Brothers last night
Date: 27 Mar 1997 16:13:13 GMT

Page joined the Allman Brothers on stage for an encore of "One Way Out"
bringing a rousing conclusion to the glorious 12 night Allman's stand
at the Beacon Theatre in New York City last night. The show was also
the the 27 or 28th anniversary show for the Allmans. As the Allmans
took the stage it was announced that on the exact same night over 20
years ago was the Allmans very first jam session. For most of "One Way
Out" Page was inaudible, but he did take two short solos. For the
second solo Page and Dicky Betts had an extremely short duel. Dicky
walked over to Page and said something. A second later Dicky played a
guitar solo, stopped and looked over at Page. Page then duplicated what
Dicky played. Then Dicky played another short guitar solo and Page
tried to top it with a quick solo of his own. But then the mini duel
ended just as quick as it began. Dicky and the rest of the band just
started jamming and didn't stop to leave room for Page to solo again.

Page's appearance with the Allmans this year was drastically different
than last year. Last year Page had to save the day for the Allmans.
Greg Allman was hurt in a motorcycle accident and in too much pain to
finish the show. Greg Allman had to leave the show and Page filled in
for him for half of the show. But this year Page was a special guest,
sitting right next to Greg Allman on the keyboards. Page and Greg both
had big smiles on their faces as they wailed away on the keyboards just
inches apart.

The show last night was incredible. I saw two shows on the run and the
second set of another show. Every night was absolutely mind blowing.
Everyone seemed to agree that these Allman Brothers shows were among
the best the band has played in years. They did two 1 1/2 hour sets.
Each song had brilliant jams lasting up to 20 minutes. Practically
every song just took off in the middle with spectacular jams. The
Allmans are on FIRE right now. Just smokin'. If you've seen the Allmans
before and were dissapointed go again. I assure you that this time will
be better. I thought I would never see the Allmans again. But I decided
to give them one last shot. So I went to one night at the Beacon. And
I was so blown away that I had to go back for two more nights! This is
a show not to be missed. Trust me. They play all of your favorite
tunes. Some songs I heard were: Midnight Rider, Ramblin Man, a SMOKIN'
Frankin's Tower Jam>Blue Sky that was pure ecstacy,
Jessica, Whipping Post, St. Stephen jam, Southbound, Seven Turns,
Dreams. The highlight of the three shows I saw was a first set closer
of In Memory of Elizabeth Reed that must have lasted about a half hour.
It was incredible. I can't even describe the magnificent musicianship
exhibitied by the band during this complex instrumental. It was just an
incredible jamthat ranked up there with one of the best jams I have
EVER HEARD by ANY BAND. I couldn't quit humming the familiar riff all
night. In between sets I was talking with some tapers by the soundboard
who have seen the band for years. And they all agreed that the Eliz.
Reed we heard that night was one of the best versions they have ever
heard. It was just a very magical jam that can't be put to words. I
urge all of you to see the Allman's on tour and DEFINITELY get tapes of
this year's Beacon Theatre run. You will not be dissapointed. No
grovels please because I don't have any of the tapes and if I did I
already owe about 5 people a shitload of tapes. see ya at moe. (can you
believe it sold out weeks in advance!!) at Irving Plaza and Jazz
Mandolin Project at the Knitting Factory,
                     ....AJ....

PS - I'm gonna need rides to a bunch of summer shows. If anyone can
offer rides to any shows, lemme know. I live in NYC, therefore I have
no car.
